Nigeria’s number one airline, Arik Air has added another feather to its cap as it received global acclaim at the 22nd International Quality Summit hosted at the Marriott Marquis Hotel in New York on May 26, 2008.

The International Quality Summit Award was presented to Arik Air in the ‘Gold’ category in recognition of commitment to quality, leadership, technology and innovation.

The event was presided by Jose E. Prieto, President and CEO of Business Initiative Directions (BID), along with outstanding personalities from the business world and the diplomatic corps in the USA.

The significance of the impact of quality on products and services used daily, on companies themselves and on the society in general, led BID to create a modern TQM (Total Quality Management) made up of 100 Points of Quality and the International Awards to recognize companies that met such criteria.

Addressing the delegates at the Summit, Jose.E.Prieto said, “The awarded companies are symbols of commitment to leadership, quality and innovation which make them models for other companies of their sector. All the Awards announced today represent a level of excellence achievement by the winners.”

Arik Air Managing Director, Michael McTighe and General Manager Sales & Marketing, Suraj Sundaram were in New York to accept the award.

Receiving the award McTighe said; “Arik Air received the Gold Award for Excellence and Business Prestige, in recognition of our continuous search for quality and service improvement, backed up by our solid safety culture.

“Two months ago, we received our first award when we were recognized in Nigeria as the ‘Airline of the Year’ from Thisday newspaper, so it’s a great feeling of achievement to be recognized outside of our home country.

“We greatly value this recognition. The fact that we have been able to win this award at a time when competitive pressures are continuing to build throughout the industry, confirms our strong position in the market. This recognition means at the same time obligation and encouragement for us to move on in our dedication to guest satisfaction. Our company accepts Quality as a factor of development to become more competitive and for ensuring sustainable growth”.

Sundaram adds; “We see this award not only as recognition for Arik Air but also for the people of Nigeria and the aviation industry in the region. It is an honour that our humble contributions and efforts towards expansion, while being committed to quality and safety improvement have received international attention.

“We are expanding our market, and to be known as the best in the region is an astounding success story for an 18month old airline. Successful Quality Management requires both behavioral and cultural change by a company. Therefore we will continue to provide our guests with the best service possible to maintain our market position as the region’s leading airline. I want to take this opportunity to sincerely thank each and every staff member of Arik Air, and the one million guests who have chosen to fly with us”.

The award conferred by BID promotes the interests of clients, employees and suppliers all with a common goal of the achievement of quality in their business practices. Quality is a positive concept of globalization, which allows for the creation of better and more competitive products and services while increasing employment and wealth.

Both multinational companies and leaders at a national level from 178 countries have been awarded by BID for their leading position in turn over, profits, number of employees, quality and innovation.

BID has made its presence known around the world and has created a firm ground for the implementation of an integral quality process through ‘QC 100 TQM’. BID carries out continuous polls among companies who vote for the best companies.

The awards are presented on the basis of meeting the criteria of the QC100 TQM, the contents of which serve as guidelines to business leaders to improve processes and systems.

TQM model evaluates on various criteria such as; Quality, Innovation, Business Excellence, Profitability, Permanent Growth, Brand, Marketing, Leadership etc to mention a few.

Companies from over 68 countries participated this year to acknowledge achievements in Quality and Excellence and many of the awarded companies since the first convention in Europe in 1975 are in the Fortune Global 500 listing
