A ten-year civil war, including two rebel occupations, significantly affected Freetown’s infrastructure but the city now stands proud and unbowed. Once again enjoying rapid economic growth, Freetown features some fine nightlife and wonderful beaches but for the moment remains off the tourist trail.
The Big Market is brimming with bric-a-brac and household goods, whilst the Sierra Leone National Museum is a treasure house of history. For the best views of the city, take in Tower Hill, and enjoy stunning sunsets from Lumley Beach. The 500-year-old cotton tree is a powerful symbol of freedom from slavery, and at dusk thousands of bats emerge in an amazing spectacle.
