The capital of Akwa Ibom State, Uyo stands at the heart of one of Nigeria’s most important oil-producing regions. It’s a city with something for everyone, including centuries of history at the Uyo Museum and excellent sunbathing at the outlying Ibeno Beach.
There’s also plenty to buy at the Akpan Andam Market and Entrepreneurial Village, including highly-regarded textiles from the local mill. In particular, the state is famous for its raffia creations, with everything from baskets to ties made out of this surprisingly versatile fibre. During your visit you should also sample the local delicacy of afang soup, featuring smoked fish and shredded afang, and ekpang nkukwo, made from two types of yam.
